This is a very useful tool for parents to keep up-to-date on school board issues and meetings. Now visit the members section of the OFHSA website (www.ofhsa.on.ca) to see copies of the latest Association mailings, new announcements, the latest issue of the OFHSA Bulletin newspaper, and the latest advocacy letters sent on behalf of members. We’re all in this together!

I have a question that I forgot to ask at this months meeting.

If your own schools ordered and received agendas for students at $5.00/book ,who incurred the individual S&H charges of $1.00 per book as shipped from Vancuover apparently and now our school is out almost $500.00.

Should the H&S or Board of Education icur these fees?

    HPV Vaccine:

What are the thoughts about the lack of timeframe/information given regarding these series of vaccines for girls in Grade 8? My own daughter is in Grade 8 and I have done alot of research on this new vaccine(3 sets) and do not feel comfortable enough to back my signature on a permission form when there has not been alot of research and conclusions to these Board approved/provided shots.
I have read lots, good and bad and feel overwhelmed to make a decision in only less that 1-2 weeks. A decision that could be a positive or negative.

I think it’s important to recognize that this is a Provincial Ministry of Health initiative, not a School Board Approved/Provided situation. Boards of Health throughout the province were told to offer this vaccine at no charge to girls in Grade 8. To ease the facilitation of this process, school sites are being used, but the vaccine is administered by the Health Department not the Board of Ed. This is a difficult decision to make. And I totally agree that not enough time was given for parents to consider and make an informed decision. If you’re wondering why the rush – there’s an election in October. If you’re angry and troubled by this, you should contact your local MPP (Kevin Flynn) and demand answers.

Brookdale Public School (Bridge Rd) is planning to host a Red Cross Babysitters Certification course at our school on the December PD Day. (Dec 7) The course will run from 9-4pm. The cost is $45.00. Some schools also try to host such an event and due to lack of numbers the course must be cancelled. THis is an opportunity for kids age 11-12 to participate in a program on an “OFF DAY”.
If you are interested in registering your own child or want to announce it at your our school for those who may be interested, please do so. For further questions please do not hesitate to email myself or blog away.

Lunchroom behaviour issues….for the 3rd year in a row our school has huge behaviour issues with the interemediate grades in their ‘lunch’ room. It is the usual crew who stir the pot but as always – it does not take long for the situation to escalate. Then its a situation that is dealt with on a reactive and negative basis which generally only addresses the immediate issue. I have a daughter who is that room and would like to make her final year at elementary school more fun and productive. My personal idea is to be more PROactive and less REactive by estabilishing the standard of behaviour rules for the room and outline consequences on a gradual basis as the rules are disobeyed – I believe if the communication is there and all are on the same playing field and we maintain a consistency in the expectations maybe we could actually create a place of socialization and respect. Has anyone seen this type of system and are there suggestions on how to implement?? The problem seems to be fairly consistent and no solutions ever come forward…now is the time to change!! I would appreciate suggestions/comments from those who may had similar experience at their school??
    Thank you.

I am a newbie to the Home and School Association and I have a question or two for you.
    1. Is the H&SA a charitable organization?
    2. Is the main focus on fundraising at schools?
    3. Should a school that has H&S members be closed, where do the funds raised by the H&S for that school end up?
    4. Why would a school need representation from H&S when it has a full functioning school council?
    5. How many employees are at the H&SA – at the school level?
    6. Is it not a conflict of interest to sit and be a voting member both on the school council and the H&S?

I have many more questions … thank you for taking the time to respond.

    Susan.
    It’s simple.
Have checks and balances in place during lunchtime.
Have lunch supervisors and rules that are enforced.
    Actions and consequences.

    simple

Following our H&S mtg last night-it was brought up about Holiday Skating events being mandated to ensure that all teachers and students wear CSA approved helmets effective immediately. In the past the helmets were recommended, thus allowing parents of especailly the older children make that decision of their child(ren) skating with or without a helmet an option.
Our school has decided to completely cancel the January event as an ‘all or nothing’ decision to avoid any children who cannot/do not have helmets from not being able to attend as it is an activity during school time. There was great discussion about sharing helmets from grade to grade=possiblity of lice issues/concerns, bulk purchasing, etc.
My question is, Does any other school do a skating event too and how do you ensure that all kids wear helmets now or are your events cancelled too as you cannot ensure all kids can particiapte due to circumstances.

Does anyone have any insight to any upcoming grants that are available? Sometimes people find grants in the strangest places for the littlest things.

We are all on board for the HLF and PRO onces recently.
    Thanks….;)
